117: The Tension Between Synod and Congregations in the LCMS — with Dr. Todd Jones

Dr. Todd Jones joins Zach to explore pastoral formation, ecclesiology, and the growing tension between Synod and the local church in the LCMS—drawing from C.F.W. Walther and decades of ministry experience.

Todd brings decades of experience as a pastor, church planter, district mission executive, seminary professor, and now Director of Ministry Formation at the Center for Missional and Pastoral Leadership (CMPL). Drawing deeply from C.F.W. Walther’s The Duties of an Evangelical Synod, Todd argues that many of today’s conflicts are not political—but ecclesiological.

Together, Zach and Todd explore the LCMS’s congregational roots, the rise of centralized power, prior approval, pastoral class systems, and what it means to remain faithful to Christ when institutions drift from their stated theology. This episode wrestles honestly with authority, transparency, trust, and the future of pastoral formation—while continually calling listeners back to the local church and the mission of reconciliation.

Today’s episode is brought to you by Red Letter Living. We create resources to help the church produce greater disciples.

For so many Christians (and even churches), the discipleship process isn’t very clear.

They know they need to go to church, pray, not sin, and maybe attend a small group. While these are great things, they don’t outline a clear path leading people to live more like Jesus.

We’d love to introduce you to the 40-Day Red Letter Challenge.

When you and your church take the challenge, you’ll have a clear 40-day discipleship path that will help you master five key areas of discipleship.

You can learn more about the challenge here!
